Musical Instruments

Misings have number of musical instruments in their custody. The traditional instruments are made of bamboo. The musical instruments like Dumdum (dhol in Assamese) and loopi (Tal in Assamese) are two indigenous musical instruments of the Misings. Dendun, Dentuk, Tapung, Lenong (A brassgong used in dance and important ceremonies) and Yoksa (A straight sword about 2½ ft long is a proud possession of any genuine ‘Mibu’) are their primitive musical tools. Tapung (flute) is of two varieties: Derki and Ejuk. Derki tapung is made of selected long light bamboo and Ejuk tapung is of bamboo and a kind of wild gourd. ‘Lenong’ and ‘Marbang’---two brass gong, are used in ‘pagso-monam’ and ‘Nitom soman’ dance. Gungang (Gogona in Assamese) is a delicate musical instrument carved out of mature bamboo. Pempa is recent addition to their musical tools, made out of a fine reed, light bamboo and the conical end of a buffalo horn.
